What is a keloid ???

i want to get a lip piercing and some people have told me that u can get keloids.....what are they? and are they bad? do they go away?

What is a keloid ???
a keloid is basically a lump of scar tissue. It itches, hurts a lot, and can get so bad it has to be surgically removed.

the scar tissue can turn red, brown, or black. It's disgusting and a keloid may even expand over time. They can sting, burn, and itch oncontrollably and without warning.

as they grow, they might even ulcerate (open and become a huge open sore)

there is no 100% effective treatment for keloids.

but I wouldn't get a lip piercing anyways, it's not that attractive.
Reply:A keloid is a special type of scar which results in an overgrowth of tissue at the site of a healed skin injury

Reply:Keloids are pretty rare. They're a type of scar tissue that grows quite large. They are more common in people with darker skin. They require steriod injection.

Here is a pretty good article about them http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Keloid

Here's one about hypertrophic scarring, which is much more common.

Reply:Very simply, keloids are huge scars. They're like irregular-shaped lumps that grow over the area of your wound and can expand over time.

Some people get them, and some don't. There's no way to know for sure.

Generally, they don't disappear on their own. There're a number of treatments available... from surgical excision to steroid injections.
