Can a keloid form from a tattoo?

i have keloid skin and i really want to get a tattoo, is there anything i can do to help prevent a keloid from forming if i get the tattoo? I heard about a shot called cortisone that helps to stop overgrowth in tissue(which is what keoid is) but will that work? And how long b4 i actually get the tattoo should i get the shot?

Can a keloid form from a tattoo?
YES! my very first tattoo 7 yrs ago formed a keloid. But the tattoo artist wasn't very good, and I didn't take very good care of it. Now my ears would also form keloids. But all together I have 4 tattoos. my, first tattoo, the keloided one got covered up last yr. and it's my very favorite one. The key is get a GOOD tattoo artist, one the will take time. And follow the instructions to the tee. Don't be worried. As far as the shot, I have never heard of it. But give your doctor a call just to be on the safe side.
Reply:i have bad keloid scarring. there is a possibility that you can get a scar like that but i have three tatts now and in some places you can feel it ontop the skin but they look great. i just kept it up like they said to... i wouldnt worry about it because my keloid is serious and my tatts are just fine! good luck! =]
Reply:I would talk to a dermatologist before you go in they can help answer any medical questions you have.
Reply:i have a friend who's like you and when she got a tatt it looks nice it's just it is more like a 3d tattoo coz it has a texture (what the tattoo is then the keloid is the same eg. if ur tattoo is heart then ur keloid's shape is heart)
Reply:Tattooing does not cause keloids, even on skin prone to it. It's a different kind of injury that develops a different kind of scar. A tattoo is more like a cross between a scrape and a sunburn. The kinds of injuries that cause keloids are puncture wounds and cuts. The body deals with different kinds of injuries differently.

No need for a cortisone shot. Obviously you'd want to talk to a tattoo artist, just to confirm, but I am pretty positive that a tattoo will not cause keloids.
Reply:I have had some keloids (my skin is prone to all sorts of weird stuff!), from cuts and piercings. All my tattoo work is just fine, however. Never ANY issues.

However

A tattooer working on me once said that people more prone to keloids, for example, many Blacks (African descent) don't tattoo well because of scarring. He cited "some of the tattoo work on Black basketball players you see on TV" as an example.
