My tragus piercing may have formed a keloid, can I still get other piercings?

I got my tragus pierced in May and LOVED it, however i kept getting a small reddish pink bump. The tattoo shop kept saying "Its drainage, just lance it." A few days ago I noticed it was bigger then it had ever been and had turned white. I went to the doctor and he removed the piercing and drained the bubble. He had to cut it open and when the bump did not go away decided it might be a keloid, put me on ten days worth of keflex and told me to return if it isn't better.

I am an 18 year old white female and I really loved my tragus piercing. I have my belly button pierced and four ear piercings with no problems, i had my upper ear pierced but took it out b/c of scarring. I was wondering if I would be okay to get a tragus piercing in the other ear, or if I'd be more likely to form a keloid.

I only want to hear from people who have personal experience with keloids from piercings, and/or medical training.

My tragus piercing may have formed a keloid, can I still get other piercings?
Some people have ears that are determined to form keloids in a cartilage piercing (which is what your tragus is made of).

Other people form keloids due to irritation from friction on the piercing, jewlery that did not fit correctly, improper cleaning. accidental bumping or anything else that ends up irritating your piercing.

Since you've had scarring on cartilage piercings in the past, it is possible that scarring is just your body's reaction to cartilage piercings. However most people have their cartilage pierced with guns and are given incorrect cleaning advice, both of which can lead to irritation which causes scarring. So you may have ears which naturally don't like cartilage piercings and then accidentally made the situation worse because you weren't given the right directions to care for them.

If I was in this situation I would find a new, more knowledgable piercer, tell them my previous experience with tragus piercings and ask what they think should be done. A piercer should be able to make adjustments to your jewlery and your cleaning instructions to give you the best chance possible of healing your tragus with no problems.

You will have to keep pressure, friction and bumping into things with it to an absolute minimum. You'll also need to avoid touching your piercing at any time other than cleaning. Your piercer will probably have you perform sea salt soaks to clean the piercing 2-3 times a day for several weeks. After that time you will still need to soak your ear at least once a day for a few months to allow complete healing. Cartilage piercings take 6-12 months to heal, so don't quit cleaning early.

If it were my ear, I would try again. It's up to you if you want to take the chance of scarring again despite your best efforts. Work with a piercer with a great reputation and go over your options.
Reply:Keloid formings seem pretty random to me, but once you get one, you're more likely to get more simply because it means you're at that age- younger people getting pierced are less likely to get them. I had one on a normal ear piercing, and haven't had any in 4 more, so ... good luck!
Reply:I formed a keloid on my first rook piercing. Took it out, waited over a year, got it repierced and it was fine. I've had multiple piercings since then and they've all been fine. I have been told multiple times messing with the jewlery too much, as well as changing jewelry before the piercing heals can cause keloids. But by far the number one reason is jewelry that is too tight.

Just remember to follow directions, be gentle when handling a fresh piercing, and be patient in putting in new jewelry. Let your body adjust to having metal in it before you mess around with the piercing.

And if you have a keloid, don't just pray it goes away - get it treated. Otherwise they can leave scars and possibly damage your ear, causing more problems! But as for me, I've had em and been fine with more piercings.

I have a tragus piercing and it's my favorite as well! Hopefully you'll be able to try again!! Good luck!!
